What is a Driving Licence?

A Driving Licence (DL) in India is an official document issued by the Regional Transport Office (RTO) authorizing individuals to operate motor vehicles. It confirms that the holder has the necessary skills and legal permission to drive.

There are multiple types of driving licences in India based on vehicle class – two-wheelers, four-wheelers, transport vehicles, and more.

Types of Driving Licence in India

  • A Learner’s Licence (LL) is a temporary licence that allows beginners to practice driving under supervision before applying for a permanent licence.
  • A Permanent Driving Licence is issued after passing the driving test and allows the holder to drive legally on public roads.
  • A Commercial Driving Licence (CDL) is required for those who want to drive heavy motor vehicles or transport goods and passengers for commercial purposes.
  • An International Driving Permit (IDP) enables you to drive vehicles in foreign countries as per international conventions.
  • A Duplicate Driving Licence is issued if the original licence is lost, stolen, or damaged.
  • A Driving Licence for Two-Wheeler and Four-Wheeler is categorized based on the type of vehicle you are eligible to drive, such as scooters, bikes, or cars.
