What is an International Driving Licence?
An International Driving Licence (IDL), also known as an International Driving Permit (IDP), allows Indian drivers to drive legally in foreign countries. It is a translation of your Indian Driving Licence and must be used along with it.

How to Apply for International Driving Licence in India?
Step 1: Check Eligibility
- Must have a valid Indian driving licence
- Licence must be valid for at least 6 more months
Step 2: Prepare Required Documents
- Valid Indian driving licence (original & copy)
- Passport and visa/residence permit (original & copy)
- Passport-sized photographs
- Medical certificate (Form 1) if required
- Address proof (Aadhaar, utility bill, etc.)
Step 3: Apply at RTO or Online
- Visit RTO or apply via Parivahan
- Fill application Form 4 for IDL
- Submit documents and pay the fee
Step 4: Processing
The RTO will verify your documents. You may be called for in-person verification. Processing takes 7–15 days.
Step 5: Receive Your Licence
Collect your IDL from the RTO or receive it by post if applied online.
Validity and Use of International Driving Licence
- Valid for 1 to 3 years depending on the country
- Must be used along with Indian driving licence
- Not valid for driving in India
